The History of Strasbourg Airport

Historically, Alsace has been passed between both Germany and France, affecting the history of air traffic in Strasbourg. In 1913, the German Empire built a small airfield there, which was used during the First World War for military purposes. After the war ended and Strasbourg was handed over to the French, the airport housed a flying school and civilian planes began landing there.

The airport in Entzheim near Strasbourg was finally put into operation in 1935, but the looming Second World War ensured that this airfield was also used as a base by the German Air Force. It wasn’t until the 1950s that civilian planes once again began to land there. In 1963 Strasbourg Airport received the title of "International Airport" and the number of passengers rose dramatically.

In the 1990s, the airport area was enlarged and numerous buildings were newly erected, expanded and modernised. In 2017, a comprehensive capacity expansion was achieved by the construction of a new hangar and the modernisation of the reception building for those travelling on business. If you are travelling by private jet to or from Strasbourg, you will not only get to experience its eventful history, but also the airport’s current state-of-the-art amenities.
