History of Bristol Airport

The history of flight operations in Bristol started in 1929, when a local flying club bought a farm in Whitchurch to build an airfield there, which was inaugurated in 1930 by Prince George. Bristol Airport in Whitchurch was well attended and in 1939, 4,000 passengers passed through it. During the Second World War it was the only civil airport used in the UK.

After the end of the war, it became clear that the capacity of the Whitchurch site would no longer suffice. For this reason, a military facility of the Royal Air Force near Redhill, Somerset was developed into the new airport for Bristol. In 1957, this was opened by Princess Marina, the widow of Prince George, who had died in 1942. In the 1960s, the runways were extended and a new passenger building was constructed in response to the growing volume of passenger traffic. In the year 2000, a new terminal, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, was opened. Nowadays, Bristol Airport welcomes over 7 million passengers each year with more than 70,000 flight movements.
