Aviation Pioneers: Antwerp ARN’s History

Antwerp Duerne Airport has a long history in Belgian and European aviation dating back as far as 1909. In that year, the world-famous adventurer and aviator Baron Pierre de Caters created the "Aéroclub d'Anvers" – a club for all those early explorers interested in air travel. The "First Flying Week of Antwerp" took place from 23 October to 2 November 1909. This grandiose air show, one of the very first of its kind, saw the first airplanes flying over Antwerp.

In 1929, construction of a passenger terminal began. Many architects competed for the commission, but ultimately a design by Modernist architect Stanislas Jasinski won out. This first passenger terminal at Antwerp Airport was finally opened in 1930. At the time, Antwerp Airport was already connected to other airports, including Geneva, Paris, Lyon, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Zurich, Basel, Brussels and Hamburg by designated flight paths, placing it firmly in the centre of early European civil aviation.

During the Second World War, the airport was used by the Luftwaffe and significantly expanded by the German occupying forces. It was not until 1946 that civil flights to Antwerp Airport resumed. In the 1960s, both runways and buildings were expanded, owing to the increasing volume of passenger flights to and from the city. In the 1970s, Antwerp ANR Airport was extended and enlarged. In 1975, for example, new arrival and departure halls were built. In the decades since, the airport has been regularly renovated, redesigned, and expanded.
