History of the St Gallen Altenrhein Airport
Built in 1925, St Gallen Altenrhein Airport has a long history in Swiss aviation. Originally, a 600 metre long grass landing strip was used between 1927 and 1933 for regular scheduled flights to Basel, Munich, and Innsbruck at the site that Altenrhein Airport now occupies. After the Second World War, Claudio Caroni took over the airport, now under the name "Flug- und Fahrzeugwerke Altenrhein" (FFA). In 1954, a second runway with a length of 1,200 meters was built, and was later extended to 1,500 meters in 1979.
In 1987, Caronis son Luciano sold the company to Schindler Holdings, which in turn sold the aircraft construction business to Justus Dornier Holdings. After several changes of ownership, the airport now belongs to entrepreneur Markus Kopf, who founded the airline People's Viennaline in the city. Today, St Gallen Altenrhein Airport is an important traffic hub, especially for business flights and private jets.
